French Markets

Brittany market

French Markets are an integral part of French life and no town would be complete without its weekly market. Market day is always the busiest and you can find stall holders selling clothes, records, dvd’s, art work, books and much, much more. However, it is the food stalls that attract the locals and tourists alike and with good reason.

Take a walk amongst stalls full of fresh local breads, home-made preserves, butter and cheeses of every size and shape, stop and watch whilst the stall holders turn freshly roasting chickens and loins of mouth-watering pork.

Choose from the vast array of fresh fruits and vegetables, olives of every description, sausages and hams and seafood. Pick from various locally produced ciders and wines and other local specialities.

Dont forget, that if browsing all this delightful produce has given you an appetite, why not try one of the most popular and traditional Breton snacks – the’ Gallete Saucisse’, a buckwheat pancake rolled around a fat pork sausage – delicious.

There are a variety of Markets in France and listed below are some of the ones you may come across:

Marché

This is normally the local village/town market and mainly provides fresh produce. At these markets you will be able to find locally produced fruits/vegetables, cheeses, meats (cooked and uncooked), sausages, breads, breton flans and cakes, crépes and galletes to take home or to eat while you walk. The experience is simply pleasurable! And the food is simply wonderful! An absolute must for anyone visiting Brittany.

Brocante

The Brocante is really like a flea market or a car-boot. Every Sunday throughout the good weather you will find a town or village or city, holding its own annual Braderie. Its often a very social thing, a time for the locals to get together and chat. Often entertainment and snacks and even full lunch-time menus are available.

Antiquités

This is usually a professional market, but not everyone selling is a professional. Her you will find a vast array of antique furniture, books, postcards, ceramic ware, advertising memorabilia and lots more.

French Markets are full of fascinating, friendly people and stalls packed full of tantalising fresh produce. However, don’t take my word for it come and try it!!

Note: the gite you choose will have information on where and when each weekly market in our area takes place.
